Speech and Debate Takes a Win

By: Jordan Barr

On Saturday, January 20, ten students gathered at the high school at 6:45 in the morning to depart for Warrensburg’s Speech and Debate Tournament. With about 300 student entries altogether, two of our students Joselina Berg, a junior, and Garrett Gifford, a senior, moved on through the completion into finals. Garrett ended up placing fourth in Extempt, where students draw and pick a topic to write a speech over, and perform it for judges after a thirty minute prep time. Joselina Berg later placed sixth in Prose, the reading of a short story in six to eight minutes where you are allowed a binder and your story, and it does not need to be completely memorized.

When asked how she felt about finalizing and later placing, Joselina had mixed feelings on the matter. “I felt excited to be doing so well at such a big tournament, however I was disappointed I wouldn’t get to nap until later,” she said. Congratulations to all those who went and participated, and well done to our medalists. There will be another Speech and Debate Tournament On Saturday, January 27, held In Salisbury, Missouri. Good luck to those upcoming competitors.
