The Richmond boys basketball team has been named MRVC East Conference Champions for the first time since 2011. On February 13th, they defeated Higginsville at home 70-50, improving to 18-6. The team set three goals at the beginning of the season: Conference title, 20 wins, and a District title. Their first goal has been accomplished. “We’re making progress to reaching our potential, seeing us reach our goals lets us know that we’re putting in the work. The players have bought in and committed, and that’s what you want from a team,” Coach Kevin Jermain said.

The basketball team was just 12-13 last season with a new head coach, and in just 2 years, Coach Jermain turned Richmond basketball around to 18-6 in counting. “I can’t take the credit, we have great players on this team and the success starts from them. The biggest change is that the players bought in and it just makes it easier,” he said.

The Spartans were seeded #2 for the District Tournament over Lawson, who they lost to in their season opener by 2. The Spartans have worked their way back up to the position that they say they’re capable of being in. “Seeing the path we have in districts, it’s very motivating and we need to take it one game at a time. We have a chance to meet Lawson again in the Semifinal game. This is a great opportunity to see who we’ve become since the beginning,” Coach Jermain said.
