Springing into Sports

Now that the winter sports are over and the cold is drawing to an end, it’s time to get back outside, stretch out those legs, and take a deep breath of fresh air. February 26th marks the day for the beginning of all the spring sports: baseball, boy’s golf, boy’s tennis, and track and field. Practices for these spring sports began at approximately 3:00 in the afternoon.

The seniors will be spending their last season here at Richmond High School with their fellow peers and competitors. Though this sports season symbolizes the end of the seniors’ high school career, they have big aspirations and to go out with a bang. Senior D’Tanyon Maxwell, hurdler and sprinter for the Richmond track and field team, believes that the team will do well this year. “My personal goals are to give 100% effort and to break my Uncle’s record in the 300m hurdles,” states Maxwell, “Everyone is competition and there are always eight racers on the track that are capable to win the race.”

Senior Lennon Puls has played tennis for all four years of high school. He has many goals set for the near future and aspires to end his Spartan career by giving his all on the courts. “I want to leave a lasting impression on the underclassmen and give them motivation to work hard when they’re at practice,” states Puls. The tennis team has a total of nine juniors and seniors, making the team more experienced with most of them going into their third or fourth year. However, “getting the less experienced players up to speed, and being able to help them learn the game of tennis” could cause a setback for the team. With the team working hard with each other, the Spartan tennis team will go far.

Four-year veteran Dylan Alexander plays third base for the Richmond Spartan baseball team. “We don’t have many new people this year so we have all been playing together. Which means we will do well together as a team and win some more games,” states Alexander. The only setback they have is that “with the team only winning two games last year, most of the team doesn’t take the sport seriously and try”. Alexander hopes to do his best, try his hardest all throughout the season, and help the team in any way he can.

Though the season has only begun, the sports teams aspire to go far this season and complete many goals. Good luck this season Spartans!
